If you plan to shop for your Halloween costume in a Goodwill store, then I have one simple but serious request: Please be sensitive.
Please be sensitive to the many people who shop there year-round and not just for a goofy holiday. Please be sensitive to the fact that they may have no other options. Please be sensitive to the fact that where you have come to play is where many people come to try to get by.
Please think long and hard before you walk around the store, giddy, laughing, making fun of things you find, and taking selfies. Remember that there may be people around you for whom this is not amusement. People around you who may be struggling.
I’m not gonna go IN about classism and privilege and all that other stuff (tempting as that might be). This is not a sophisticated analysis, and it is not about evoking guilt. It’s simply about recognizing the people around you, the ways their realities differ from yours, and calling on yourself to be a better person in whatever small ways you can amidst the struggles others may be facing.
